What is Your CSA Leader Style?

Christopher, Smith & Associates LLC (CSA) had developed the following exercise to help you begin the process of recognizing what CSA Leader Style you prefer to use with your followers. We believe it is also the same one you prefer your leader(s) to use when you are a follower. It is clear that since your leader(s) and followers will have many different CSA Leader Styles, you need to know how to work successfully with all CSA Styles. The first step is to learn about your own preferred Style. We encourage you to do this simple exercise, learn the results and then discuss (by email or phone) the process with us for an hour. The cost is $50.00 but our usual hourly fee is $350.00 so this is quite a bargain.

To help you learn more about your current CSA Leader Style, please follow these instructions: Write down the NUMBER of one paragraph in Group A and one in Group B that best describes you as a leader. Each paragraph as a whole is more important than individual parts of it. Your immediate reaction is usually the best one. If it is impossible for you to make a selection, then write down number 7.

GROUP A
(Write down, or remember, the number
that best describes your attitude when you lead)

1. I lead trusting that almost always everything will be OK. I enjoy being with people and helping them feel positive about life. When I am disturbed about something, I try not to bother others with it. Sometimes this has caused me to delay handling a difficult situation of my own.

2. I lead with definite ideas because I believe in being straightforward, but I am more sensitive than most people realize. When I encounter a problem, I want to change what I am convinced needs to be changed. I understand life and don’t need anyone reminding me of what the rules and regulations are.

3. I lead believing in a rationale for what I do. When faced with conflict, I try to remain logical and maintain self-control. Because I prefer to work alone and prize efficiency, I may appear distant at times, but I care deeply about people and causes.

GROUP B
(Write down, or remember, the number
that best describes your actions as a leader)

4. I am a leader who faces life directly. I don’t look for trouble, but I’m not afraid of it. When I get involved, I am fully committed. Whatever I do, I do whole heartedly.

5. As a leader it is not my style to speak or act forcefully. I am not afraid of the spotlight but I don’t need to draw attention to myself. I am assertive only when necessary.

6. When I am the leader my actions are based on principled policy. I accept responsibility and hold myself and others accountable. Although I would usually rather not take the lead, I am willing to make sacrifices in order to reach our goal and do what is best for the team.

7. I am unable to choose. I am none of these OR I am a combination of them.
