Step ONE:  If you want to lead others more successfully, you must learn to lead yourself more effectively.  Begin by doing the CSA Leader/Follower Style Exercise.

What is Your CSA Leader/Follower Style?

In order to lead yourself, you must know your CSA Leader/Follower Style.

Christopher, Smith & Associates, LLC (CSA) has developed the following exercise to help you recognize the CSA Leader/Follower Style you prefer to use with your followers. We believe it is also the same one you prefer your leader(s) to use when you are a follower. It is clear that since your leader(s) and followers will have many different CSA Leader/Follower Styles, you need to know how to work successfully with all CSA Styles.

Write down the NUMBER of one paragraph in Group A and one in Group B that best describes you as a leader/follower. Each paragraph as a whole is more important than individual parts of it. Your immediate reaction is usually the best one to choose. If it is impossible for you to make a selection, then write down number 7.

GROUP A
(Choose the number that best describes your attitude.)

1. I lead/follow trusting that almost always everything will be OK. I enjoy being with people and helping them feel positive about life. When I am disturbed about something, I try not to bother others with it. Sometimes this has caused me to delay handling a difficult situation of my own.

2. I lead/follow with definite ideas because I believe in being straightforward, but I am more sensitive than most people realize. When I encounter a problem, I want to change what I am convinced needs to be changed. I understand life and don’t need anyone reminding me of what the rules and regulations are.

3. I lead/follow believing in a rationale for what I do. When faced with conflict, I try to remain logical and maintain self-control. Because I prefer to work alone and prize efficiency, I may appear distant at times, but I care deeply about people and causes.

GROUP B
(Choose the number that best describes your actions.)

4. I am a leader/follower who faces life directly. I don’t look for trouble, but I’m not afraid of it. When I get involved, I am fully committed. Whatever I do, I do whole heartedly.

5. As a leader/follower it is not my habit to speak or act forcefully. I am not scared of the spotlight but I don’t need to draw attention to myself. I am assertive only when necessary.

6. When I am the leader or a follower my actions are principle centered. I accept responsibility and hold myself and others accountable. Although I would usually rather not take the lead, I am willing to make sacrifices in order to reach our goal and do what is best for the team.

7. I am unable to choose. I am none of these OR I am a combination of them.
